TALLMADGE DEMOCRATIC CLUB SUPPORTS USW-L2 AND THE STRIKING GOODYEAR WORKERS

Calling on Democrats, Area Labor Organizations and Friends of Labor to Support USW-2L Goodyear Workers.

Our Labor friends need our help. As you may know, the Union workers at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company are on strike.  If you work an eight-hour day and forty hour week, if you receive time and a half after forty hours, if your workplace is safe, if you receive vacation time that cumulates with your service time, if you have health care and retirement benefits, and if you believe in America's middle class - give our Labor Unions a BIG Thank you.  Because without the Labor movement in America, you would not have the benefits I just mentioned. It is time for all of us to give back.

Goodyear was hurting In 2003.  The union responded to the crisis Goodyear was experiencing and agreed to allow the company to cut some 6,000 jobs including closing a plant in Alabama, as well as trim pay, health care and pension benefits in order make the company solvent.  The company has turned the corner and is now making a profit.

Labor Unions, the backbone of the Democratic Party, have been decimated by corporate America and the Republican Party since Ronald Reagan.  It is time to help our Labor friends build another workers movement, not unlike the labor/industrial movement in early 20th century, that recognized the dignity of work, fair pay, and a rightful voice through collective bargaining contracts. Will you show your support for signing up to stand with our Labor friends?  We are looking for folks to give two hours a week to walk the picket line with our Labor friends.  If you don't have the time then can you donate food items for the families of the striking workers?  How about making a donation to the USW-L2 strike fund?

Goodyear wants more cuts at the expense of the workers. Goodyear wants to cut their pay, hurt retiree benefits and close more factories in Gadsden, Ala., and Tyler, Texas that employ about 2,200 union jobs. Mike Roop, a USW member employed at Goodyear stated, "That's a slap in the face, say workers who believe they helped get Goodyear back in the black. "Two billion dollars in concessions in 2003. Now they want more," The company touted the vital role the union played in its $1 billion turnaround plan but investors don't think it's enough. According to the SEC documents, many of the investors, have been pressuring the company to shift jobs overseas for cheaper labor and production costs.  Whatever happened to the common good in this country.

The Tallmadge Democratic Club will asking all Democratic precinct committee people in Summit County to bring non-nonperishable food items to the precinct committee meeting on January 16, 2007 to assist the Goodyear families on strike.  Continue to visit this site for more details.

YOUNG DEMOCRATS ORGANIZE IN TALLMADGE
Wednesday, September 6, 2006

On Wednesday, September 6th, the Young Dems at Tallmadge High School, held an organizational meeting for students interested in building a Democratic organization at the high school.  Mrs. Sarver, a history teacher at the school, opened her classroom up to young men and women interested in forming the Tallmadge Young Dems.

Also in attendance was Lisa Zeno Carano, Tallmadge City Councilperson and her husband Patrick Carano, Tallmadge Democratic Club president.

Tom was elated by the turnout of 40 students who want to become politically involved.  Tom stated, "We are fortunate to have intelligent and engaged students in Tallmadge who care and want to be involved." Tom added, "These bright, articulate kids are the future leaders of our country and often know the issues facing us better than the adults."

Students Albert Melfo and Brice Croskey posted meeting flyers in the halls and doorways attracting students from freshman to seniors.  Albert spoke to the students about the organization's future plans and the importance of being involved.

Brice Croskey is already in the process of designing a web-page for the Tallmadge Young Dems and the group will participate in organizing the Democratic Rally on the Circle on Sunday, September 17th.

The large number of students present at the meeting reaffirms to all of us that "Democracy is not a spectator sport".

For more information and to become involved in TYDC, please contact Albert or Brice at school or e-mail the Tallmadge Democratic Club at  tallmadgedems@yahoo.com.

Mayor Grimm and the Tallmadge Democratic Club hold Fundraiser for Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate
September 17, 2006

Mayor Chris Grimm and the Tallmadge Democratic Club held a fundraiser and Democratic Unity Rally on Sunday (September 17th) for Congressman Sherrod Brown for Senator with State and local democratic candidates. Both events were a huge success. The two events brought together over 200 area Democrats for a good old fashioned political rally at the historic church and Old Town Hall.  The message for the day was CHANGE!  Change in leadership and change in the direction of Ohio in 2007.

The perfectly sunny day started at noon with a fundraising event for U.S. Senate candidate, Congressman Sherrod Brown, at the Old Town Hall. Congressman Tim Ryan was present as well as local candidates and elected officials.  Spotted in the crowd were Tallmadge Council members Jack Sarver, Linda Poinar, Pete  DeAngelis, Jerry Feeman and Lisa Zeno Carano. Sherrod and Congressman Tim Ryan chatted and posed for pictures with those in attendance. Mayor Grimm welcomed Ohio Senate candidate Brown to our beautiful city and thanked him for his work in Congress on behalf of middle class families, the American worker, and our retirees. When Sherrod walked up to the front of the hall to address the crowd everyone erupted in loud and sustained applause lasting several minutes.

The relaxed and down-to-earth Brown was introduced to members of the Tallmadge Young Democrats, posing for pictures with the enthusiastic young men and women and future leaders of our Party. Many residents showed up to lend their support for Congressman Brown. Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer was on hand, as well as Tallmadge residents Jim & Kathy Harris, Tim Smith & Rose Rilling, and TDC member and Tallmadge Young Dems advisor Tom Headrick, to name a few.

Sherrod wanted to know more about the Tallmadge community and its history. Local historians Jim and Carolyn Mackey shared their knowledge of the pre-civil war anti-slavery movement in Tallmadge and our community's involvement in the underground railroad to free slaves. Sherrod commented not much has changed in Tallmadge with the residents since the 19th century as witnessed by the good turnout on Sunday.

The fundraiser attracted many Democrats from outside of our community. Fred Mendiola and Chris Mallin from Portage County attended.  Jerry Winningham from Green, Dottie Marsh from Akron's west side (yes, she is Judge Stormer's mother!), and Lou Berroteran from Cuyahoga Falls stopped by to pay tribute to Sherrod. Ilene Matias was seen snapping photos of the day's activities.

The interior of the town hall was pointedly decorated and the hors d'oeuvres were excellent. A big thanks goes out to Rose Bochert, Karen Morgan, Nancy Treichler, Diane Grimm, Jill Stritch and Sandy Zeigler who put their planning expertise to work. Many attending the fundraiser commented on what turned out to be a spectacular event. Sherrod Brown's staff in particular, were blown away by the attention to detail that went into the day's activities.

Tallmadge Democratic Unity Rally Mobilizes area Democrats for Victory in Ohio on November 7th
September 17, 2006

At a little after 1:00 p.m. Mayor Grimm, Tim Ryan and Sherrod proceeded to the beautiful Historic church on the Circle grounds while stopping to chat to candidates, residents and organizations. Mayor Grimm gave the opening address starting with all reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent prayer for our servicemen and veterans.

The rally was well represented with several organizations co-sponsoring the event; The Summit County Democratic Party, Hudson Democratic Club, Potage Democratic Coalition, Summit County Young Democrats, Tallmadge Young Dems, and the Ohio Progressive Action Coalition. Candidate Co-sponsors included; Judicial Candidates Clair Dickinson, Paul Gallagher and Tom Teodosio, Stephen Dyer for the 43rd State District, John Poda and Ilene Shapiro for County Council, and Sherrod Brown for US Senate. The co-sponsors set up booths with campaign literature and canopies to shield the sun.  A huge American flag and red white and blue buntings decorated the front of the old grand church.  Candidates yard signs circled the entire Circle and every walkway leading up the the front of the church where the podium was located. Mayor Grimm and Rep. Ryan gave inspiring speeches about the need to make government do what it is supposed to do - govern.  Something that has been lacking in Ohio for a long time. More speeches were heard by Richard Cordray, Betty Sutton, Tom Sawyer, our Labor friends, and representatives for State candidates who could not be there due to other commitments around the State. Sherrod Brown proved again to be truly a man of, by and for the people.

Special guests included Betty Sutton who is running for Rep. Sherrod Brown's open 13th congressional district seat, Richard Cordray for State Treasurer in Ohio, Tom Sawyer for the Ohio School Board, Subodh Chandra representing gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland, Tim Carpenter, National Director of the Progressive Democrats of America, AFL-CIO Labor Council Executive Secretary John Wagner and United Steel Workers Local -2L Political Director Dave Prentice.

On behalf of Bill Moyer of the Backbone Campaign, Tim Carpenter and Patrick Carano awarded Sherrod Brown the Backbone Award for his hard work on trying to defeat CAFTA   After sixteen years of Republican rule at the State House, Ohioans have witnessed over 230,000 good-paying manufacturing jobs leave our State, skyrocketing health care costs, college tuition costs soaring, and scandal upon scandal from Republicans in Ohio,. Sherrod Brown has stood up for working Americans, the middle class, and senior citizens his entire career to improve our lives. He is a well deserved recipient of this prestigious award. To learn more about this national award and an article on Sherrod Brown receiving the award in Tallmadge, go to: www.backbonecampaign.org.

The Circle event was a time to celebrate with food, fun, entertainment and what has proved to be the strongest slate of candidates in many years. As we move closer to election day on Tuesday, November 7th, it is our responsibility as citizens of this great country, to educate ourselves on just who the Democratic candidates are - and to be sure to vote the Democratic ticket all the way down the ballot - from Governor to our own judicial candidates in Summit County (that would be Dickinson, Gallagher and Teodosio).  The winds of change are blowing in Ohio.  It is time to make our government work for people again. It is up to each and everyone of us to do our part to make it happen.

We welcome you to join the Tallmadge Democratic Club by e-mailing us at www.tallmadgedems.org.
